Configuration versus Customisation

Ri-gnr8 Configuration versus Customisation

Op2ma’s standard platforms are very flexible and help our clients transform their
workflows to be more efficient, productive, and profitable. On occasion, our clients’ requirements exceed our flexibility and customisation is required.

All of our systems can be customised and how we do this is what sets us apart. Sometimes the difference between configuration and customisation can be hard to understand. The following assists with determining how to differentiate between the two.

Configuration:

Is adjusting the settings on something that’s already built.

It’s like setting up a new smartphone, you select your wallpaper, ringtone, and set up your email
preferences. You’re using the options that are already available to make it personalized.
Configuration doesn’t require any special coding or changes to the product itself. You’re working
within the choices you have been given. For example, with Ri-gnr8 One, you configure it by adding your team, suppliers and DMS. You select your KPI’s from an extensive list and your preferred automated reporting from the options.

You’re maximising the flexibility of the system to make it yours without changing how it
fundamentally works. Other configurable include adding your logo, changing the name of field but not the calculation, choosing your system defaults, choosing your display options, creating your own charts in reports.

Customisation:

Is making something entirely unique, almost like building it from scratch to meet your specific needs or to create a competitive advantage. It involves more in-depth work, like writing new software code to build a new process or modify an outcome to a new one.

For example, when a special tool is needed to service a unique machine, they hire an engineer to design it from the ground up. It’s tailored to their exact requirements and performs tasks no off-the-shelf tool can.

Some specific examples of customisation include Single sign on, APIs to legacy systems, recalculating fields, bespoke leaderboards, additional fields with corresponding reports.
Customisation is an hourly fee with a minimum of two hours.

We will always explore our extensive configurable options before moving to customisation. We will provide a scope document with an estimate for confirmation before commencing
any customisation project. Choosing between the two depends on your goals and resources. Configuration is quicker and easier, while customization can give you a solution that’s precisely what you need but might take more time and money to build.

If a client requests an enhancement or change to the solution that Op2ma deems may improve the overall base solution the cost of this change may be reduced to the client and put into the work schedule for updates.
